“Become the public speaker you’ve always dreamed of being!”

Yes, dreams can come true… and did when we kicked off our 2020 programme with presentation coach, award winning broadcaster and documentary director, Russell Walker of Russell Walker Training.

No matter what you do, the chances are you will have to make a presentation at some point in your career. So, great presentation skills are really important says Russell.

Russell’s presentation started of a bit like a food fight, well not exactly. First up he spoke about the benefits of eating specific kinds of foods ahead of public speaking which resulted in him throwing bananas into the audience followed by eggs! – unbeknown to the recipients the eggs were hard boiled and their reaction was hilarious.

This was a great ice breaker, and Russell now had the breakfast crowd’s attention.

Russell set the scene and went on to explain that talking to an audience, big or small, can feel like the most daunting thing you’ve ever had to do. The great news is that public speaking is a skill that can be taught. You can learn how to deliver memorable presentations that get you noticed.

There were many tips and ‘interactive’ techniques shared by Russell including:

  • How to find your authentic voice: have a shift in your mindset and think “How can I help you?” This will make it easier to take your audience with you.
  • Warm up your voice: Russell had us all going “pah paw poo…” and “gah gaw goo…” in order to get our voices in shape and ready to present and project.
  • How to control your nerves: don’t try and reach perfection, just be as good as you can be. It’s ok to be nervous, but also be excited and ready to teach.
  • Build rapport with audience: be aware of your body language; facial and head expressions, eye contact, body posture and gestures.

It was an extremely entertaining and insightful presentation from Russell who has worked with some iconic people such as Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, Michael Caine, David Bowie, Sean Connery and Sir Alex Ferguson.
