Many of us make the jump between private and public sector organisations during our career but few jump between sport and business.

As we know sport is primarily a business, but what do we really know about success in sport? There is much to be learnt and we had just the man to educate us at our April Breakfast.

Having spent 25 years in the construction industry as a Quantity Surveyor, our guest speaker Fergus Wallace has made the transition from business to sport and back again.

Fergus captained Glasgow Warriors Rugby team for 6 years and represented Scotland at 7’s and 15’s gaining 12 ‘A’ caps. He also captained a Scotland XV to Zimbabwe in 1995 scoring a try in a memorable victory over the 1994 springboks who were otherwise unbeaten.

Combining his strong sporting experience and sound commercial knowledge ensured Fergus was ideally placed to take up the role as Glasgow Warriors’ Commercial Manager in 2011.  His 3-year tenure with Glasgow Warriors was arguably their most successful period in Rugby Union to date.  Fergus also attained great commercial success by generating infinitely more sponsorship than had ever been achieved in Scotland since the game turned professional.

In 2014 Fergus became Head of Sports Partnerships with House of Fraser. This role is about using connections to grow the brand and Fergus firmly believes that there is an untapped market in the utilisation of linking sport and business, and vice versa.

At the April breakfast Fergus talked us through his successes in sport and business that came from good communication whilst sharing his analysis of what works and what does not work.

Fergus entertained us with some sporty stories from his heydays in rugby and the leadership roles played throughout his career.
