Social media has provided companies with the opportunity to engage directly with their customers and clients and has helped them communicate their brand message in an undiluted manner. However the use of social media also creates the possibility for negative messages to be sent directly to a company’s followers and therefore creates the opportunity for a carefully constructed brand to be badly damaged.

At the November Communications Breakfast Ben Doherty, head of employment law at Lindsays guided us through the ‘law of social media’, as the demands on business for its use are ever increasing. Ben and his team specialise in advising SME businesses and charities on how to manage their employees. He has advised numerous clients in respect of the misuse of social media by their employees. Using hilarious real life examples Ben explained the steps that a prudent employer should take when managing their employees use and misuse of social media and identify how employers should mitigate the risk they face when disciplining an employee for misuse of social media.
