BLOG: Glasgow Airport – the cornerstones of values based leadership

Date: Thursday, August 4, 2016 Date: Thursday, August 4, 2016 Time: 07:45 - 09:15 Location: The Corinthian Club, Glasgow

This is a past event

In the year when Glasgow Airport celebrates 50 years we were delighted to welcome Airport MD Amanda McMillan OBE to the breakfast.

Amanda and her team at the airport have recently been voted Europe’s Best Airport following the enhancement of its facilities, improving the passenger experience and securing a host of new routes and services.

Amanda is also Chief Executive Officer of (AGS) Airports Limited who run Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Southampton airports so to have her share with us her personal reflections on the cornerstones of values based leadership was very exciting.

She opened with some background including her first exposure to Leadership at her time with KPMG and then Diageo – mixed experiences, however described by Amanda as “very good learning time”.

With great delivery and wit Amanda then took us to her current position brought to life through the lens of Glasgow Airport, where she has been MD since 2008.

She spoke fondly of the 5,000 strong people who work in and around the airport and shared the approaches she has taken to personal and organisational leadership. We were told not to expect others around you to change, just because you want them to! As a leader you change and then others will follow, this seemed to have worked well for Amanda and her team. Clearly the airport has been growing and developing the right culture for the organisation – a culture that everyone has bought into, participated in and have a great sense of belonging.

It was great to have Amanda share with us her experiences and much of what was said clearly resonated with the large audience at the breakfast that were keen to ask questions and talk to Amanda afterwards.

In summary, it’s obvious that to be successful in leadership you need to make clear what your values are because people don’t like to follow rules – they need to have ownership.

Thanks again to Amanda for taking the time to share her thoughts and insight with us all.

Next month we welcome Dr Jillian Ney back for her Breakfast hat-trick, this time; ‘Finding the Secret Triggers to Creating Sharable Content’ – Book now to secure your place…
