Glasgow Chamber of Commerce is all about supporting members and championing Glasgow. At our November event Chamber deputy chief executive Richard Muir brought us up to date with Glasgow Chamber’s activities and revealed 10 things that you probably didn’t know about your city, Glasgow.  Richard, who has been with the Chamber for 10 years, explored some key themes around the economic opportunities which exist in Scotland’s biggest city and touched on some of the distinct advantages Glasgow has including:

  • Skills and millennial talent
  • Innovation
  • Infrastructure
  • The destination appeal of the city

Using a mix of case studies and stats Richard lifted the lid on the 10 things that make Glasgow stand out as the city we know today. Some of these include:

  • Fourth most productive city in the UK
  • Provides one third of Scotland’s jobs
  • Makes more satellites than any other city out with America – WOW!
  • Central station sees over 32 million travelers pass through it each year
  • Second only to London for retail in the UK
  • In the top 50 financial districts in the world attracting huge investment
  • The Hydro is in the top 5 world arenas for ticket sales
  • Voted European city of sport 2023, the only city to have received this twice
  • Two universities; Strathclyde and Glasgow in the world’s top 50

All in all this proves Glasgow has a worldwide attraction and good pedigree in many areas other than just commerce.

To top it all, coincidently it was announced today that Glasgow has been voted the UK’s ‘Cultural and Creative City 2019’ by the EU.

If there was one criticism highlighted in Richards presentation it was that we don’t shout about Glasgow’s success and achievements nearly enough. To help rectify this the Chamber along with city partners will be providing some tools to help us all market the city more successfully.

More details will be available shortly at:

A big thanks to Richard for his insight and knowledge at November’s event – that last one of 2019.
